Angie's Tutoring: Math Standards

Emphasizing Common Core State Standards

More than 40 states, including Ohio, worked together in 2009-2010 to create new educational standards for mathematics and reading that will lead students to be more competitive with top-performing students around the world. These standards, called Common Core State Standards (CCSS), will be implemented by 2014. Here are a few key points about the mathematics standards.

  • The new standards identify the most important concepts to be mastered at each grade level so students learn the critical prerequisites for the next grade.
  • There will be less duplication across grades and more emphasis on thorough development of key concepts, leading to higher mastery.
  • The new guidelines tell what concepts to teach but not how to teach those concepts, so either traditional or reform approaches may be used.

During the transition period between current state standards and CCSS, students may need to catch up on concepts that CCSS recommends for a grade level lower than their current grade.

Angie is implementing Common Core State Standards now and has developed assessments and checklists to lead students to higher achievement! See the checklists by visiting www.mathpaths.com. Call 937-409-2019 for help today!
