What curriculum is used?
Many students bring along their own textbook to get help with their current class. Angie also gives tests or quizzes to diagnose gaps in critical skills and concepts, and then creates customized activities to help students master those skills. Angie uses the Common Core State Standards as the guide for what students should know. Mental math, thinking skills, and algebra readiness concepts are emphasized more than in a typical classroom, to lead students toward long-term success in math. For SAT, ACT, and GRE test preparation, Angie uses study guides published by the College Board and other companies.

How often should a student be tutored?
This depends on the student's needs. During the school year, most students benefit from a weekly one-hour session. If a student is working below grade-level, it may be better to schedule a longer session or two sessions per week. In the summer, students will progress more quickly by coming two to five times per week. It's up to you!

How are students assessed?
Each student has a folder with a checklist of key concepts and skills for their grade level, based on Common Core State Standards. Angie also gives short diagnostic tests and practice assignments at least once per month.

What is the tutoring location?
Angie tutors in her studio in the northern part of Oakwood, which is just south of Dayton, Ohio, near the University of Dayton. On-street parking is available. The tutoring room is similar to a small classroom.

What will happen at a free consultation?

  • Angie will ask the student to solve a few problems similar to those on an Ohio assessment test or from a standardized test.
  • You will be able to see Angie's tutoring techniques. When the student needs help, Angie will ask leading questions to help him or her understand and solve the problem. Angie may also provide math manipulatives or tools to help with understanding the problem.
  • You will be able to discuss tutoring needs, rates, and any questions. If you decide to schedule tutoring sessions, there is a $20 registration fee which also serves as a scheduling deposit.

What if a student needs to miss a scheduled lesson?
Please notify Angie 24 hours in advance to reschedule a lesson (call 937-409-2019). Make-up lessons may need to be scheduled for evenings or weekends because weekday afternoons are usually filled. With shorter notice, up to one lesson per quarter can be rescheduled or cancelled due to illness or emergency with no penalty. Otherwise, the lesson fee will be forfeited.

How can I pay for the tutoring sessions?
Angie accepts payments by cash, personal check, or PayPal.

How do I know if my child will benefit from tutoring?
Is your child ever frustrated in math? Did you think she or he could score higher on state or national tests? Do you think mathematical strength is as important to their future as sports or music? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, Angie can help.
